walmart neighborhood market logoAccording to this article in the  News & Record, Walmart will open one of its ‘Neighborhood Market’ concept stores later this year in Quaker Village – at the corner of West Friendly and Guilford College Rd in Greensboro. Walmart Neighborhood Market stores are about one-quarter the size of a Walmart Supercenter and offer groceries, produce, health and beauty items, as well as, a pharmacy and deli.

This will be the third Walmart Neighborhood Market in the Triad. You can see this News & Record accounting of the first Walmart Neighborhood Market located in High Point which opened in August of 2013. The second is in the former Borders bookstore on High Point Rd in Greensboro.

I say thank goodness something is happening with that center. It is outdated and largely functionally obsolete. In my opinion the only thing to be done is to start over. It sounds as if that is the plan. It’s hard to imagine a Walmart Neighborhood Market agreeing to be wedged into a largely intact but defunct center.

Hopefully the developers, and powers that be, will thoughtfully enhance the parking and entry/exit opportunities. I have no idea where that stretch of road ranks in terms of traffic accidents, but it must be high. Would it be too much to ask for additional turning lanes?

One would think that the entry of Walmart Neighborhood Market to our area would put competitive pressure on incumbent full-service grocers like Harris Teeter. That can only mean good things for folks like you and me.

It’s hard to imagine a better development use for this particular piece of property.
