If you’re one who wants to go with what’s trendy, design magazines are filled with minimalist, functional bathroom designs that incorporate sleek looks and interesting mixes of natural materials. It’s a look I enjoy, but if you want to make your own design statement or build a timeless in-home retreat, there are so many options out there.

For example, there are interesting choices for cabinetry that aren’t bathroom vanities, unique bathroom sinks, a variety of faucet options, and modern technologies that would make the Jetsons proud!

Unique Bathroom Vanities

Ever since I saw a friend’s remodeled bathroom, which included an antique chest of drawers repurposed as a vanity, I’ve loved the idea of using something unique in shape, size, or appearance in a bathroom or powder room. Here are a couple of creative ideas I’ve seen:

  • An old desk
  • Old file cabinets or map drawers
  • An antique sideboard
  • A hall table
  • An old potting table

I’ve even seen a vanity/sink combo made out of a vintage boat motor, created for a lake house!

Interesting Bathroom Sinks

Most of us are used to the standard porcelain bathroom sink either overmounted or undermounted to the vanity surface. If you’re like me, you grew up in a house with a porcelain sink overmounted on top of a formica countertop – or perhaps an avocado-green tile one? Today, if you’re looking for a builders-grade sink/counter combo, there are lots of attractive options – just look at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or another home improvement store for ideas. But if you’d rather spend your hard-earned money on something a little more “you” or a little more unique, why not consider a sink made from:

  • Clear or colored glass
  • Handmade pottery bowl
  • Custom-sized and shaped concrete
  • Metal
  • Wood

Faucet Options Abound

For awhile now, it has seemed that brushed nickel was a permanent player in the bathroom renovation game. Gone were the 1980s-era brass or brass-like faucets and handles…gone were the plastic-y faux crystal knobs of the 60s and beyond. EVERYONE was replacing old, outdated faucets with brushed nickel or stainless steel. Isn’t it wonderful that design has gotten so eclectic these days? Now, it’s not an easy choice, but what you end up with is definitely a personal choice that suits your style and budget… and designers are mixing and matching finishes instead of keeping everything “matchy matchy.” For functionality, fun, and visual interest, why not choose something a little different?

  • Channel spouted faucet
  • Waterfall faucet
  • Wall-mounted faucet
  • No-lever, touchless faucet
  • Ceramic faucet

High-Tech in the Bathroom?

As with other rooms in the house, the bathroom is gaining technological ground these days. A few modern options I’ve seen lately will either make your bathroom retreat more enjoyable, more comfortable, or just moe interesting. For example, see:
