Oak Ridge is known for its exceptional schools and larger homes. Visitors to the area often seek out the Oak Ridge Military Academy, a notable landmark. A private college-preparatory military boarding school, it was established in 1852 and became a military school in 1917. Famous graduates include NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who attended the Academy in the late 1980s; and a 1996 graduate, Nancy Mellette, who enrolled in The Citadel (then all-male) as one of its first female cadets after a high-profile lawsuit.

Popular with tourists and locals alike, The Old Mill of Guilford is a fully operational water-powered grist mill founded on Beaver Creek in 1767 to grind grain for Guilford County’s early settlers. The Mill’s current owners use the same time-honored techniques and equipment to mill high-quality grain products of all kinds, from pancake mixes to steel-cut oats, which are shipped to foodies across the country and used in several Piedmont Triad-area restaurants.
